Geometrical Aspects During Formation of Compact Aggregates of Red Blood Cells

چکیده
In the past forty years considerable progress has been achieved on the knowledge of human blood as a non-Newtonian shear-thinning suspension, whose initial state, that is at rest (stasis) or at very low shear rates, has a gel-like internal structure which is destroyed as shear stress increases. The main goal of this communication is to describe the role of geometrical aspects during RBC (red blood cell) aggregate formation, growth and compaction on naturally aggregate (porcine blood) and non-aggregate (bovine blood) samples. We consider how these aspects coupled with tension equilibrium are decisive to transform red cell linear roleaux to three-dimensional aggregates or clusters. Geometrical aspects are also crucial on the compaction of red blood cell aggregates. These densely packed aggregates could precipitate out of bloodeither as dangerous deposits on arterial walls, or as clots which travel in suspension until they block some crucial capillary.

Aggregation of mononuclear and red blood cells through an {alpha}4{beta}1-Lu/basal cell adhesion molecule interaction in sickle cell disease.
BACKGROUND Abnormal interactions between red blood cells, leukocytes and endothelial cells play a critical role in the occurrence of the painful vaso-occlusive crises associated with sickle cell disease. We investigated the interaction between circulating leukocytes and red blood cells which could lead to aggregate formation, enhancing the incidence of vaso-occlusive crises. DESIGN AND METHOD...
متن کاملFluctuations in settling velocity of red blood cell aggregates
Sedimentation of red blood cell aggregates was experimentally investigated by optical imaging. Suspensions of red blood cell at low hematocrit were obtained from blood of healthy donors. The velocity of three-dimensional red blood cell aggregates was measured using particle image velocimetry. The magnitude and spatial correlation functions of the velocity fluctuations of the settling aggregates...
متن کاملThe Frequency of Packed Red Blood Cells Transfusion in Preterm Infants Admitted to NICU of Shahid Sadoughi Hospital During 2016
Background: Red blood cells transfusion is a useful practice for preterm infants. Large amount of blood is usually wasted in the infants. Considering that few studies have been carried out on infants, the aim of current study was to investigate the frequency of packed red blood cells transfusion in preterm infants admitted to NICU of Shahid Sadoughi Hospital in Yazd during 2016 Materials and M...
متن کاملP-24: Opioid and Progesterone Signaling Is Obligatoryfor Early Human Embryogenesis
Background: The growth factors that drive the division and differentiation of stem cells during early human embryogenesis are unknown. The secretion of endorphins, progesterone (P(4)), human chorionic gonadotropin, 17beta-estradiol, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone by trophoblasts that lie adjacent to the embryoblast in the blastocyst suggests that these pregnancy-associated factors may direc...

The influence of surfaces on the reactions of platelets in whole blood under laminar flow was investigated in a cone and plate viscometer. Citrated whole blood was exposed to steel, PMMA and PMMA modified with PEO at low (500 s(-1)) and high (4000 s(-1)) wall shear rates at room temperature for a period of 100 s. Treated blood samples were fixed with paraformaldehyde, stained with a monoclonal ...
